The secret to jumping higher - Learning how to dunk
When I was in high school I was always athletic but not the most vertically gifted until my final year. What happened? Well its going to sound like a stupid story but its 100% true. During our last travel basketball game one year we were forced to play on a net that was bent down about 6 inches. During the game I had a nice dunk and after the game I decided to see what else I could do on that lowered net.
So I went up for a dunk with a lot of confidence since the rim was lower and threw down a windmill. After that I decided I would try to get this done on a full sized net. I went out to the "court" one day and just started trying to throw down whatever dunks I could think of. Initially I couldn't do it but I was pretty close.
After a week or two of trying and practice I was throwing down windmills, ally-oops, 360's, reverses and much more. Why was I finally able to do it now? Surly my body didn't change much over this short time so it had to be something else. Well the main thing was training your muscles to jump properly by practice and repetition.
This alone is not enough. Surely lots of people train and practice but do not achieve great results. You have the right mentality when you are doing it. There must be this no fail attitude where you wont accept anything from yourself except the results you were hoping to achive.
Set your goals high and don't stop until you reach them. If you only try what you know you can do, you will not get better.
